To be fair, I thought I was getting a grain-free dog food. That is what my Labradors have always had, and it has been very successful at keeping them healthy, and my yard with less runny poo and fewer piles to pick up. Dogs haven’t, to my knowledge, at any time in their history been farmers. Yet we feed them grains like it was good for them. Uh, not really. Their guts do best with a healthy protein diet from primarily animal meats with some vegetable protein and fiber sources thrown in – peas, sweet potatoes, chicory root, berries, tomatoes, Yucca, etc. Not barley, brown rice, or oatmeal.

Wellness does have oatmeal, brown rice and barley, but it also has peas and some good proteins, as well as chelated minerals and probiotics. Overall, the protein-carb ratio is a little low, I would like to have less than 50% carbs at the most, and avoid fillers like brown rice and tomato pomace (the trash left behind when processing tomatoes).

The meat sources seem good, and the product is ethoxyquin-free – very important for your dogs health, and very common put in as a preservative and in most fish-meals. Monsanto says it is “perfectly safe” as an additive – riiight! It is also a pesticide.

So Wellness is not the best dog food in my opinion, and it does contain grains and fillers. It is expensive for what you get as well. But most dogs will do very well on this, and I did feed it to my dogs without much worry. However, after runny poo and more gas, and observing the nature of the fecal piles, I decided to go back to some other grain-free dry dog foods. Right now I am using Taste of the Wild, and rotate the several flavors. My dogs seem to like changing it up after each bag, so I keep a variety – I don’t like the same each day, do you? And I guarantee a better mix of nutrients that way to avoid sensitivities.

My 20 month old yellow lab loves this food. I’m 100% positive he’d love any food I fed him, but I feel better feeding him this because of the quality ingredients used. Been using this for 8 months now with no plans to change any time soon. Highly recommended.

Changed from Blue Buffalo a few months ago and we love this. Bigger chuncks slow down his eating. And his back end is a little less stinky 🙂
